Whether you’re pregnant now, or hope to be soon, prioritizing education about this life transition is extremely helpful in adjusting to your new role as a parent. A lot of times when we think of growing a family and welcoming a baby, we get locked into planning for “all the things we will need.” The crib, the car seat, the clothes and gear, etc. And while yes, those items are helpful to have, so is knowledge about pregnancy and the process itself. As someone who has supported women in matrescence for the past decade, I have seen over and over again the benefits of accessing information on pregnancy. Not only does it demystify the process but it helps to prepare you for what to expect once baby comes.
You get to learn
You get to learn about all the changes that happen during, and after, pregnancy. From learning about fetal development to support you in choosing your prenatal healthcare to learning about the changes in your relationship to self that can occur when you welcome your baby, this transition is filled with new and different things! And setting aside time and space to gather information can help decrease the anxiety and worry that comes from the big unknowns.
You get to practice You get to practice and think about what it will be like to be a parent to your child. So many resources encourage conversation and reflection to support you in developing yourself as a new parent. You can start to think like a parent and talk like a parent to help increase your confidence for when baby is here.
You find support persons
When you engage in pregnancy education, you are learning from others who have been there before and/or who work in the field. You develop a relationship with this person, or persons, which can be really helpful to have in your back pocket once you have your baby. Because the reality is there will be a day when you’re tired and feeling overwhelmed from caring for your newborn when you will need someone to talk to. These will be the support persons you reach out to for guidance on the transition or even just some reassurance.
Understanding the nuances of changes, from the subtle to the monumental, allows you to embrace the journey proactively. In the grand tapestry of pregnancy, education weaves a narrative of empowerment, resilience, and preparedness. It transforms the unknown into the known— fostering a sense of feeling calm, grounded, and assured.
