My favorite piece of advice I received when I became a mom by Brittany DeNucci

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

When you become a parent you're innodated with all sorts of advice. From random strangers to well-meaning relatives, everyone's got some wisdom they'd like to impart upon you ((a lot of which you wish you wouldn't have been given.)) 🤭 One of my favorite pieces of advice I received when I was a new mom, that I still pass on to the mommmas I work with, is a version of, "sleep when the baby sleeps."
Rest when the baby sleeps This nugget of wisdom actually takes the pressure off of a new mom to fall asleep every time her baby does and, instead, encourages her to slow her body down. In a world where societal norms often place unrealistic expectations on mothers, demanding not just the care of a newborn but also the upkeep of a household and the pursuit of new hobbies during maternity leave, the deliberate choice to prioritize rest has been stigmatized. The prevailing notion that mothers should effortlessly manage a myriad of responsibilities has created a cultural taboo around acknowledging and embracing the essential need for rest during this stage of life. This stigma can inadvertently contribute to undue pressure on mothers, neglecting the significance of self-care.

This advice challenges these societal expectations by inviting a momma to rest and fosters a more compassionate and understanding environment that recognizes and values the restorative power of intentional rest.

So, to my mommas reading this now... help break the "super mom stigma." Put your feet up and get horizontal on the couch. And remember, when it's nap time, you don't have to pressure yourself to fall asleep right when your little one does but don't rush to try and complete the whole household to-do list. Nurture your body and mind by choosing intentional rest. 💕

Warmly,
